Generally two way radio communications belong to two categories namely FRS (family radio service) and GMRS (General Mobile radio service). There are similarities and differences between both of them however it is difficult to say which one is the best?
One can only conclude that eventual selection is based on the individual requirement of the customers.
Let’s have a sneak preview of their features
FRS radios:
The gadget can be used without any registration requirement and the associated fees. It basically deals with short wave communication as prescribed by the federals communications commission. Since FRS radios use public frequencies that are not secured, they cannot be used by the companies for businesses. To get a better option for privacy, you might need to purchase UHF license for exclusive usage.
No subscription fee is charged from the FRS users as they can transmit data across 14 channels. Seven channels can be shared between various groups.
Privacy code by squelching is necessary to reduce disturbance while multiple conversations are taking place through the FRS radios. Privacy scramble can do the job but there are no means that the conversations is secured as they are in case of transmitted internet messages.
FRS units emit low power signals that are not quite suitable for long range conversations. It is ideal for family but can miserably fail if deployed at outdoor locations.
GMRS:
General mobile radio service is especially useful for the outdoor locations because they emit a 2 watt power, a far cry from the minuscule 0.5 watt of FRS. GMRS signals can work on both types of communication bands.
The radio has a total of 22 channels however FCC requires the users to get the license for using GMRS bands. Of these seven are shared with FRS and rest exclusive belong to the GMRS signals.
While buying the GMRS units, look for lower receiver sensitivity ratings to ensure that the gadget offers high quality transmission. Battery capacity should be optimum to support high powered signals of the GMRS. Maximum range for general service can increase to 10 miles unlike that of FRS that can only transmit up to one mile.
If you are going on a trip to hills and mountains, carry GMRS radio as it is more than enough to ensure hassle free communication irrespective of the terrain. You would never lose contact with your group and also get advanced alerts about the change in the weather.
Similarities between FRS and GMRS radios:
Call alert is activated in the modern gadgets to ensure that you do not miss a single conversation. Moreover, scanning option is available to check which channels are free for transmission
Drop in portable chargers to the eclectic mix and enjoy long hours of conversation without worrying where the next source of power supply would come from. Unlike the dumb devices of the past, both FRS and GMRS radios are equipped with LCD screen to check the channels for conversation and privacy codes that are activated. The device operates on the principle “what you see is what you get”.
